Decoy making has long been an established tradition in coastal North Carolina. Like other everyday activities that becomes obsolete with a changing lifestyle, the practice of turning wood into ducks had been taken for granted, ignored, possibly even forgotten. What was once an everyday practice might have become extinct had it not been for those who loved and appreciated the art. They passed that love down through generations and outweighed the changes taking place around them.
Decoys have become a symbol of the heritage of eastern North Carolina. Used by Indians as well as settlers, these tools were an essential part of the individual's equipment in utilizing the natural resources for survival.
Each December the Core Sound Decoy Festival, sponsored by the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild, is held on Harker's Island, NC. The annual weekend festival includes the International Waterfowl and Fish Carving Association sanctioned competition, an auction of old and new shorebird and waterfowl carvings, and a loon calling competition. Duck carvers from all over the Atlantic Coast exhibit their work and offer it for sale. The Decoy Festival is held to promote and preserve the carving of waterfowl decoys, the oldest folk art in this country.
